Sometimes having just one romantic partner isn’t enough—opening the door to nontraditional relationships involving throuples, quads, or polyamory.
Polyamory is a form of ethical non-monogamy, in which all people involved have knowledge about opening the relationship up to other romantic participants. The arrangement can lead to bringing a third or more into a traditional pairing, or consist of someone having relationships with more than one person, separately, concurrently and consensually.
Being poly is different from cheating or having an “open relationship,” the latter of which usually involves simply satisfying sexual needs outside the confines of one’s primary partnership.
While polyamory is certainly more readily accepted and talked about in the queer community, high-profile personalities from across all genders and sexualities have been open about their experience with the practice. And a few names below might just surprise you!
Willow Smith
Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter Willow Smith confirmed her polyamorous lifestyle during an episode of Red Table Talk with her mom and grandmother.
“With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do,” she said, as her grandmother said she assumed being poly was just about wanting to have more sex.
Pushing back, Willow said, “In my friend group, I’m the only polyamorous person, and I have the least sex out of all of my friends.”
Nico Tortorella
“Younger” star Nico Tortorella hasn’t been shy when it comes to talking about his polyamorous relationship with gender fluid activist Bethany Meyers. The actor first came out as “sexually fluid” in 2016, before identifying as bisexual.
“I am kind of a serial monogamist in my polyamory,” Tortorella told Attitude in 2020. “I’ve explained this term before, but it’s a lot of fancy words jumbled together for, I love dating one person at a time. I’m married, yes, but I love dating one person at a time. I have a partner in LA that I’ve had for a long time, but I’m not his only partner; he’s not my only partner.”
Janelle Monae
Singer/actress Janelle Monae confirmed she’s been in polyamorous relationships while speaking with British Vogue in 2023, joking she was “never was the girlfriend that would be jealous.”
She spoke about it again on Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper that same year, saying someone became interested in both her and her partner at the time and they “just made it work.” Monae said she’s open to more poly relationships in the future, saying, “I’m honoring all of me, I’m not closing off my sensuality, my sexuality, my polyamory.”
Ne-Yo
Ne-Yo made headlines in 2025 when he came out with his polyamorous relationship with three women: influencer Arielle Hill and OnlyFans models Phoenixx Feather and Bella.
“My love life is phenomenal. I’m in a great space. I have four beautiful ladies that who move with me on a regular,” he shared in YouTube livestream.
“When I got with these women, I did not ask for their exclusivity. I did not demand their exclusivity. They asked for it,” he also explained on The Angie Martinez Show. “They came to me and said, ‘I want to be exclusive to you and just you.’ I said, ‘You understand that your exclusivity to me, does not mean my exclusivity to you? You understand this, yes? You’re OK with it?’”
Derrick Barry
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum Derrick Barry has been open about being in a throuple, or relationship with two other men, in the past—often speaking out about polyamory.
Speaking about his situation with the Advocate, he said, “Our dynamic is important for me because for over four years it has been just the three of us. A big misconception, especially in the gay community, is that it’s like a revolving door, and it isn’t like that. I hope people can see that it’s possible to be in love with two people and be in a committed three-way relationship.”
Sasha Colby
Fellow “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star Sasha Colby came out as polyamorous in a 2024 interview with OUT, explaining she had two partners and was also dating a third person.
“This is probably news breaking, but I’m actually poly!’ she shared at the time. “I have a few people that I’m dating and talking to. It takes the pressure off one relationship. I’m just able to really have absolute autonomy and be myself and focus on my career and have a couple of people who really care about me. It’s literally ‘tag you’re it!’ It literally takes a village.”
Ethan Coen
Filmmaker Ethan Coen (“No Country for Old Men,” “The Big Lebowski”) has been open about his polyamorous relationship with wife Tricia Cooke, who identifies as queer and lesbian.
“We have a very unconventional relationship,” Cooke told The Times. “So we have other [sexual] partners as well. So we can go home and we can vent. Especially while we were working. Ethan’s partner was the costume designer and was there with us. But you know, I could call my girlfriend and rehash the day. We have some space even though we still live together and we enjoy each other’s company.”
He added, “it’s never been a problem for us. And it’s not a problem for other people, as much as it used to be, right? How nice if it was never a problem for anyone.”
Jena Malone
“The Hunger Games” star Jena Malone opened up about her sexuality in a 2022 Instagram post shared on World Pansexuality Day, in which she also identified as poly. Saying she always felt like a “heterosexual man in a woman’s body,” Malone wrote that she “visualized his desires and placed them on to me.”
“But this, was never the whole of the story that was meant for me. So I’ve been learning a new way to tell it. Using words to guide me not define me. That my sexual identity has more to teach and to tell me,” she added. “Finding words that feel more right to explore in my telling. Pansexuality. Sapiosexuality. Polyamory. A fuller spectrum of understanding that my story is demanding of me. And I’m honoring it today with this soft and sleepy little stretch of a dance.”
Ezra Miller
In 2019, “The Flash” star Ezra Miller opened up about their polycule—a group of people in a polyamorous relationship—with Playboy.
“I’m trying to find queer beings who understand me as a queer being off the bat, who I make almost a familial connection with, and I feel like I’m married to them 25 lifetimes ago from the moment we meet,” said Miller. “And then they are in the squad—the polycule. And I know they’re going to love everyone else in the polycule because we’re in the polycule, and we love each other so much.”
Jane Schoenbrun
“I Saw the TV Glow” and “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” writer/director Jane Schoenburn has been open about their polyamorous relationship.
“I’m poly and have three partners, but one of my partners I’ve been with for 19 years, since high school,” Schoenburn shared in a 2024 interview with Bright Wall/Dark Room, with The New Yorker explaining Schoenburn married Melissa Ader in 2014, but has two other partners.
“I think Melissa would agree that our relationship is ultimately better for it,” Schoenbrun added. “But to allow that kind of versatility requires a lot of emotional work to be, like, strong enough, or whatever.”
Yungblud
Singer Yungblud identified as poly in a 2020 interview with Attitude.
“I probably would say now, I am polyamorous. Before I didn’t fucking know what I was,” he said at the time. “I was meeting people and learning… by meeting them and talking about sexuality and gender, I [was] going, ‘Oh my fucking God, maybe I’m this, if I’m going to be fucking close to anything on the spectrum.’”
“I’ve fucked everyone under the sun and that’s the vibe. And I love love and if it’s a vibe, it’s a vibe,” he added in a 2025 interview on the We Need to Talk podcast.
Bella Thorne
Former Disney star Bella Thorne was in a public polyamorous relationship with Mod Sun and YouTube star Tana Mongeau in 2017.
“If it works, you can spend a weekend with two people and you’re all hanging out and having fun and smoking, and like, sharing stories up late at night,” Thorne said of her experience in a 2019 interview with Cosmopolitan. “Kind of having fun, acting like children in that way. It’s a really fun experience, and I have been able to capture that a couple times, and I just love that idea. I love loving two people at once. I love sharing stories with three people in one room. So, I’m always trying to find ways to make it work because I think it really would make me happy.”
She also warned: “If you’re gonna date a guy and a girl at the same time, those people have to really fuck with each other. Or literally fuck with each other. You know what I’m saying?”
Kehlani
In 2018, singer Kehlani took to Twitter to clarify her sexuality, including the term “poly” in her confirmation.
“i’m queer. not bi, not straight. i’m attracted to women, men, REALLY attracted to queer men, non binary people, intersex people, trans people. lil poly pansexual papi hello good morning,” she said at the time.
She later confirmed she’s, in fact, a “raging lesbian.”
Frankie Grande
While he hasn’t publicly labeled himself “polyamorous,” Frankie Grande was famously in a throuple with a married couple in 2018.
“I’d been single for nine years, so I was very open to the possibilities of what love looks like, or what love could be, and it just happened,” he said at the time. “We met each other, we had common interests and we started dating.”
“It is an ethical and committed non-monogamy. So everyone knows what’s going on, there’s no cheating, we’re actually in it together,” he added. The trio only lasted a few months.
Bob the Drag Queen
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” star Bob the Drag Queen has been very candid about his experience with polyamory, confirming in a 2025 interview with Keke Palmer that he has two partners.
“One of my partners has a partner, my other partner doesn’t have a partner,” he explained. “I’ve had partners my whole life and my first partner is still my partner.”
Joey Bada$$
Rapper Joey Bada$$ tried out the polyamorous lifestyle before later deciding it simply wasn’t for him. He explained his test with being poly came after he split from his high school sweetheart.
“That’s when the the polyamory idea came into place like, ‘You know what? I fuck with you and you and y’all should know that,’” he said, saying he wanted to be “truthful” about the situation.
“But then what I realized from that in hindsight, there [was] a certain part of me that was not satisfied. I was unfulfilled,” he said of reverting back to monogamy. “And I think I was using that of what I wasn’t feeling for myself. And I was trying to use that to find in other people.”
Margaret Cho
Bisexual comedian Margaret Cho has expressed she believes in polyamory, even though she has trouble actually practicing it herself.
“I don’t have that kind of relationship where I can’t see other people but you slow down,” she told TODAY in 2021. “I just want things to be simpler. So yeah, I love polyamory, but it’s just so much talking and a lot of work. I can’t do it. I always end at one even though in my mind, I am poly, but I’m too, too, too busy.”
Mae Martin
Bisexual nonbinary comedian and actor Mae Martin is another person who hasn’t exactly labeled themselves “polyamorous,” but opened up in a podcast about stepping outside of monogamy.
“I think all it takes is knowing one couple who really are amazing at being open and you’re like, ‘Cool,’” Martin told Nicole Byer on a podcast. “I was dating a couple and they were just so cool, and they still are. And that was pretty eye-opening because they really love each other, but they had total freedom.”
DeRay Davis
Comedian DeRay Davis gave some insight into his relationship with two women, who all lived together and shared a bed, during a 2017 appearance on “The Real.”
His appearance came after he and the women—Coco Crawford and Caro Peguero—all appeared on an Oxygen reality show together, “Living with Funny,” the prior year.
“Yeah yeah, it’s a ‘lifestyle’ that consenting adults agree to. And it’s ‘different’ from an open relationship or cheating. We get it,” he said.
Taylor Nolan
“The Bachelor” contestant Taylor Nolan opened up about dipping her toe into polyamory during a 2020 special for the dating show.
“It’s been a really interesting last kind of two and a half-ish years of experimenting, of exploring kind of what kind of a relationship I want to be in. I’ve definitely kind of experimented more with poly-type relationships,” she said to Chris Harrison.
She spoke more about her preferences on her podcast, saying she likes the idea of being “monogam-ish,” or “consensually non-monogamous.”
“Will my marriage be, ‘He’s the one and only person I have sex with the rest of my life and we cohabitate and we’re each other’s everything?’ No, not at all,” she added.
Indya Moore
“Pose” star Indya Moore came out as poly in December 2018.
At the time, Moore—who uses she/they pronounds—took to Twitter to write, “So, I realized i’m poly.”
Moore has been otherwise pretty quiet about her love life, revealing in 2025 she was engaged to Elias Acevedo. That announcement, however, has since been scrubbed from her Instagram page.
Baron Vaughn
“Grace & Frankie’s” Baron Vaughn has talked about his experience being part of a “triad” or “throuple.”
“It can be daunting, it depends what you want out of it,” he shared in 2017. “And also what style you do, because there are many styles. There’ve been a couple times where I’ve been in a triad, which is essentially an equilateral ‘throuple,’ some people might call it, where everyone was in a relationship with everyone else.”
Kate Mara
While Kate Mara hasn’t spoken about her experience with polyamory herself, Elliot Page wrote about their relationship—while Mara was also dating Max Minghella—in his memoir. Per Page, Mara read the book before he released it.
According to Page, Minghella was supportive of Mara exploring her feelings for Page. “I never thought I could be in love with two people and now I know I can,” Page wrote Mara told him
“I think my relationship, or whatever you want to call it with Kate, very much encapsulates a certain dynamic that I consistently found myself in, which was falling for people that — I think a lot of us do this — who aren’t fully available,” Page told PEOPLE. “I think the love and care that we have for each other is its very own special thing. Separate from the intimacy that I write about.”
Charlie Sheen
In 2011, Charlie Sheen and his live-in girlfriends—who he dubbed his “goddesses”—were all over the media. At the time, he was dating porn star Bree Olson and model Natalie Kenly.
“You’ve read about the goddesses, come on. They’re an international sensation. These are my girlfriends. These are the women that I love that have completed the three parts of my heart,” Sheen told ABC at the time.
Added Kenly: “It seems crazy to everybody else, but for us it works.”
