The South African-born, New York-based artist returns with “Gorgeous, Rich, Successful” (GR$)—a high-energy pop single paired with a cinematic short film that transforms self-belief into spectacle. Produced by longtime collaborator Moon Bounce and directed by Talya Galasko, the release marks Magner’s most ambitious project yet, blending glossy pop production with surreal storytelling.
The track is loud, playful, and intentionally excessive. Built around commentary and criticism Magner has received throughout his career, GR$ flips outside opinions into part of the performance. Instead of running from judgment, he samples it, reclaims it, and turns it into a euphoric dance-pop anthem designed to move both bodies and minds.
Turning Ambition Into Art
At its core, “Gorgeous, Rich, Successful” isn’t simply about wealth or fame—it’s about manifestation.
The song began as an inside joke before evolving into a personal mantra, exploring the performance of success: the confidence, the fashion, the larger-than-life persona, and the decision to become the version of yourself you’ve always imagined.
Rather than waiting until you’ve “made it,” Magner embraces the idea of living as your future self now.
That message becomes even more powerful through the accompanying visual, where past, present, and future versions of Martin Magner™ battle for control inside a surreal asylum representing his own mind. Religion, repression, fear, expectation, and identity all appear as recurring symbols throughout the film, illustrating how difficult it can be to break free from the versions of ourselves we were taught to become.
“We’re Haunted By The Future”
One of the most striking themes throughout the project is the idea that our biggest obstacle isn’t always our past—sometimes it’s the future we’re afraid we’ll never reach.
As Magner explains: “We talk about being haunted by the past, but I think we’re just as haunted by the future, by who we should be, could be, or are terrified we’ll never become.”
He continues: “There’s something inherently delusional about ambition. You have to believe in a future version of yourself that nobody else can see yet.”
For queer audiences especially, that sentiment feels familiar. Reinvention, self-expression, and refusing to shrink yourself have long been central themes within LGBTQ+ culture—and GR$ leans fully into that unapologetic energy.
