Artist Statement by photographer Savanna Ruedy:
“A lot of my work is centered around queer culture and the people within it. I love photographing people in a way that feels bold, sexy, playful, and a little surreal. I’ve always been drawn to people who express themselves outside of what is expected, and I want my images to feel like a space where someone can fully lean into who they are or even become a more exaggerated version of themselves.
For this series, I wanted to play with queer masculinity and fantasy by creating this over the top tropical paradise with a strong 80s influence. I wanted it to feel campy, sexy, colorful, and slightly ridiculous in the best way by echoing the excess and glamour of 80s aesthetics. That mix of fantasy, humor, sexuality, and self-expression is something I really love and something I’m always trying to bring into my work. You can see it all mixed together here. My editing style is so important to me and most of my time is spent in photoshop after a shoot. Overall, these photos are such a great example of work I want to create.”
