Rival College Baseball Players Fell In Love — And The Rest Is History

With the explosive success of HBO’s “Heated Rivalry”, a steamy series about two closeted hockey players navigating a secret relationship, many real-life stories have come to light that mirror the show’s inspiring story.

In fact, there’s a “Heated Rivalry”-type relationship between rival college baseball pitchers that began in early 2023, and it’s making us all emotional.

Baseball and Bonding

The connection between Division III athletes Aidan Phipps and Cole Philpott began during a game between their teams, the Beloit Buccaneers and the Grinnell Pioneers.

After an uneventful matchup, something unexpected sparked. The pair exchanged kind DMs, which soon turned flirty, allowing them to get to know each other even better.

The men chatted with Outsports about their budding connection. What began as “silly in our own ways” banter and “really competitive” texts soon gave way to more meaningful conversations.

“I didn’t want to be like a weirdo to one of our competitors,” Philpott said. “So I was trying to walk that fine line. So I was definitely worried about it, but [Phipps] made the conversation really easy. So it started [with] just friendly stuff and it just kind of went from there.”

Phipps chimed in to share how he felt those first fateful weeks of getting to know each other.

“We just had that connection instantly, so I had no problems letting him know or telling him. It kind of went from there,” Phipps said.

Philpott was already out to his team at Grinnell, a queer-friendly college in Iowa.

Phipps remained in the closet. The two would work together on coming out to Phipps’s team, much like in “Heated Rivalry,” relying on each other to build the necessary courage.

When he was ready, Phipps told his teammates about his identity.

“I felt like as soon as I came out, an elephant stepped off my chest,” he explained. “I can be my 100 percent authentic self, which is super cool. It’s something I’ve never been able to do. It kind of feels like I’ve completely opened a new book in my life, which I think is super awesome. You don’t realize how much support you have until after you come out.”

The couple has since gone on to share their love with the world, ready to inspire people just as “Heated Rivalry” continues to.

“Heated Rivalry” has the world enamored with its steamy, nearly forbidden relationship portrayed by rising stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie. The actors have spoken about what the show’s success means to them and how their lives have changed since.

On a podcast with Bravo’s Andy Cohen, Williams shared that many professional athletes reached out through Instagram to say they had lived experiences similar to those depicted in the show.

“Sometimes [athletes] just reaching out privately through Instagram, and those ones are the ones that really just kind of hit you and go, ‘Oh, so this is a fun show, and it’s celebratory, but also sometimes it’s just hitting people right in the nerve.’” said Williams.

There are many true stories of closeted athletes the world may never get to know. Now we have Aidan Phipps and Cole Philpott leading the way. The two remain together to this day.

Will Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov have the same happy ending earned by college baseball stars Cole Philpott and Aidan Phipps? Only time, and a trip to the cottage, will tell.
