‘BORN TO BE SEEN’ BY LUISA BUSTAMENTE

‘Born to Be Seen’ is a celebration of queer visibility, intimacy, and the joy of shared presence. It’s a reflection of how I experience Pride: as something bold but tender, communal but deeply personal. I created these images to speak about queerness in full spectrum — not as a singular tone, but as something layered, alive, and unapologetically human.

We began this session with bright expression — clean styling, structured tailoring, and a playful energy between the models. Each element was chosen not only for visual impact, but to honor individuality and unity at once. There’s strength in standing together, and even more in standingout, side by side. I wanted these images to feel like a celebration — a space where self-expression flows freely and color becomes a form of resistance, joy, and self-definition. The poses are graphic, proud, and sometimes irreverent — but beneath the aesthetic lies something deeper: the ease of being fully seen.

From there, the session shifted into softness. We moved into an enclosed space, stripped back thestyling, and let closeness lead the way. With minimal clothing and low lighting, the focus turned to skin, gesture, and trust. These portraits aren’t about performance — they’re about presence.About what happens when queer bodies are given the space to rest, to lean on one another, and to simply exist without pretense. There’s a kind of quiet power in these frames. A power born not from provocation, but from comfort.

Throughout the process, I worked closely with the models to allow real connection to emerge. Idirected, but always with flexibility — giving room for natural interactions, for shared glances, for laughter and stillness alike. The chemistry you see is real. It’s the product of a space builtwith care, with trust, and with a shared understanding of what it means to be queer and present in front of a lens.

As a queer Latina photographer based in New York, my work often focuses on reclaiming visual space for stories that feel honest and nuanced. I’m interested in the emotional truths that live between people — and in creating imagery that holds space for both strength and softness. This session is, for me, a reminder that Pride is more than a celebration. It’s an ongoing ritual of visibility, self-making, and chosen family.

These photographs carry the echo of that day — the color, the intimacy, the laughter between frames. I hope they resonate as a kind of quiet revolution: not loud by necessity, but undeniable in presence.
