Overview of Jean’s:
Jean’s, which was initially a secret underground club of sorts, opened its floor-level restaurant last year in the storied former Butter space, and it’s been in-demand ever since. It’s the kind of restaurant that attracts a mixed crowd (complimentary): In-the-know scenesters who probably know the hip owners, Fashion Week regulars who aren’t really there for the food, Gen-Z’ers who are there because they saw it on TikTok and genuine foodies.
While Jean’s might feel like it’s one of those vibes-first, food-last kind of places — it has a red herring of a gallery entrance and a lengthy gold bar that leads to a big, open dining space — the food is genuinely delicious here. There’s a popular caesar salad and a famous-in-the-making burger on its classics-filled menu, but you’re most likely to hear people talking about Jean’s signature chocolate chip cookie.
Adding to the allure of Jean’s is that aforementioned nightclub downstairs, whose hours are seemingly obtuse (but, really, it seems to be open most nights between Thursday and Saturday). You might have trouble getting in, but we’ve heard that it can be easier to pop down to the lounge for a nightcap or two if you’re already eating at the restaurant upstairs.
Why go to Jean’s?
Go to Jean’s because you never know who you’re going to see. Go to Jean’s because it’s the perfect place to have a group dinner to kick off a night out in Manhattan and feel like you’re living your best “Sex and The City” fantasy life. Go to Jean’s because you might end up downstairs dancing off your chocolate chip cookie dessert until 4 AM next to someone you stalked on Instagram earlier in the week.
Ambiance of Jean’s?
Jean’s has an undeniable sexiness to it. There’s a see-and-be-seen, looking-over-your-shoulder feeling in the air, but if you want to really fit in then it’s much cooler to just soak up the energy from your own group and live your best life. It’s cool but welcoming, trendy but classic New York.
