How To Build Anticipation With All-Day Foreplay

When you’re in the honeymoon phrase of a relationship, the attraction to your partner is constant and palpable – you’re obsessed with each other, and understandably so, since everything is new. But at some point, that novelty fizzles out a bit. The routines of mundane life and the reality of a long-term relationship starts to take over. As a result, it’s hard to get that same level of excitement back. Which is exactly why you need to be bringing in all-day foreplay to keep things spicy.

Queer sex and intimacy coach Annette Benedetti shares, “For most people, foreplay means rushed touch, the few minutes right before sex, and that’s a really narrow way to think about it. All-day foreplay is the idea that wanting someone builds over the course of a day, not flipping on like a switch when you finally get them alone. It’s staying on each other’s radar and making that known.

And it doesn’t require constant physical or sexual contact because the biggest sex organ you’ve got is your brain. A charged look across the kitchen, a two-word text that only means something to the two of you, remembering out loud what happened last time. Your body files it all away. The point isn’t to hold someone at a boil for twelve hours. It’s to keep a little heat going so that by the time you’re together, you’re already halfway there.”

Anticipation is one of the most underrated parts of sex. Benedetti explains that desire thrives in the gap between now and later. When you know something’s coming and let yourself think about it, you’re essentially pre-loading arousal, so when it finally happens, it’s even more electric. Think about the difference between grabbing a last-minute meal because you forgot to eat and spending all day looking forward to a reservation you booked weeks ago.

How to build sexual tension all day long

You can start building anticipation before you even get out of bed. Instead of giving your partner a quick peck goodbye, give them a slow and lingering kiss. Or maybe be a tease and change in front of them, but then withhold a kiss. During the day, send a sexy but short text or voice note about what you want to do that night, and then go quiet; resist the temptation to over-explain or check for a response. Send them a song that reminds you of them with zero explanation. It’s all about being subtle and mysterious so that you leave them wondering.

If you’re worried about this feeling awkward or forced, remember to keep it personal. You don’t have to follow a generic script; reference a memory or a part of them you’re thinking about. Benedetti adds, “Voice notes are underrated because tone carries everything, and a slightly lower, slower voice does more than anything you could type. With photos, tease before you reveal. A shoulder, a waistband, a shot that leaves the rest to their imagination usually lands better than the most explicit thing you could send.”

All-day foreplay ideas for couples that live together or WFH

The mystery can disappear fast when you’re both home in sweatpants all day or used to your specific routines. In that case, Benedetti suggests that you build some distance intentionally.

“Work in separate rooms and text them from down the hall like you’re not thirty feet apart. Get ready for the evening separately so there’s a reunion when you come back together. You can also hand off tiny moments of contact all day and then refuse to escalate them: a kiss on the neck while they’re on a call, a squeeze as you pass in the kitchen, and then walk away. Living together means you’ve got endless small chances to touch. The trick is not cashing them all in at once.”

Things don’t always go as planned, and that’s ok – be flexible!

Another factor to consider is that people build excitement at different times, and sometimes, you mood can change before the planned encounter. If your excitement is ahead of a partners. Let them catch up rather than sulking. And if their mood changes, allow for flexibility; this might not be the right moment for intimacy.

The kindest (and sexiest) thing you can do is a verbal check in like, “still feeling this?” or “want to just be lazy tonight?” Giving each other an out will keep the energy positive rather than making the interaction feel like an obligation.

Foreplay doesn’t need to end in a specific way. Benedetti says, “Maybe it leads to sex, maybe it leads to making out on the couch and falling asleep, and both are a win. When you stop grading the outcome, the anticipation gets to stay playful, which is exactly what made it hot in the first place.”
