Research from England presents a vaccine with 33-47% efficacy against this sexually transmitted infection, according to experts. The 4CMenB vaccine is now being strategically distributed to clinics across the U.K. in an effort to curb the STI’s alarming rise in recent years.
The 4CMenB vaccine was originally designed to help babies fight meningitis, but research shows it can also help prevent gonorrhea.
Analysis from Imperial College London suggests the vaccine could prevent up to 100,000 cases of gonorrhoea and save the government over $10 million in the next decade, provided there is high uptake.
The vaccine is being offered mainly to gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, as they are considered at highest risk. People of other genders and sexualities may also be eligible if assessed as high risk.
The World’s Most Popular STI
It isn’t only gay or bisexual men dealing with this rampant STI.
More than 82 million cases pop up annually around the globe, making gonorrhea one of the most common sexually transmitted infections.
While not all intimate acts or exchanges of bodily fluids spread the infection, this contagious disease is primarily transmitted through sex. Condoms are still highly recommended to help prevent the spread of any STIs.
Evidence shows that gonorrhea is on the rise. According to the University of Minnesota, cases of the STI have tripled since 2012.
Over time, the infection has become more resistant to antibiotics, making this vaccine a sorely needed solution. If left untreated, gonorrhea can cause serious health problems in the eyes, testicles, or prostate.
With the help of new medical breakthroughs like 4CMenB, DoxyPep and PrEP, men have a greater handle over their sexual health than ever. Guys can see multiple partners without having as great a risk for sexually transmitted infections.
The Rollout in the U.K.
In a major win for queer sexual health, the vaccine will be available at clinics across the United Kingdom. There is a concerted effort to reach gay and bisexual men, men with multiple partners, and anyone at greater risk of contracting gonorrhoea.
Minister for Public Health and Prevention Ashley Dalton is eager for the vaccine to be shared.
“Not only will this rollout provide much-needed protection to those that need it most, but it will make the UK the first country in the world to offer this protection and a world leader in protecting people against gonorrhoea,” says Dalton. “I would encourage all those eligible to take up the vaccine when it is offered later this year, to not only keep each other safe but help tackle the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. This groundbreaking initiative will play a key role as we shift the health service from sickness to prevention”
Are you in the U.K., looking to receive a jab? Eligible patients (gay and bisexual men who have a recent history of multiple sexual partners or sexually transmitted infections) can visit a sexual health clinic and inquire about the vaccine.
Many Americans are wondering when our government will fund efforts to combat STIs impacting queer people on such a large scale.
