After taking the stage at Ostbahnhof Music Festival, the Colombian-American singer explores a more electronic sound on his newest track, produced by Zach Benson, the climax of his new EP
Colombian-American singer-songwriter Yavin has released his newest single “Switch”, part of his new EP that comes out later this year. The song, a hyperpop-infused alt-pop track, pulls inspiration from the more melancholic side of the genre, with tracks like “Tears”, by Charli xcx and Caroline Polachek, and newer names like underscores and Jane Remover.
After “Marathon” and “Come Clean,” “Switch” showcases a different side of Yavin – bringing out the melancholia and emotional lyrics but embracing a more electronic-focused production. Singing about a relationship fizzling out after the other person’s emotions switch, he points out that this is the climax of the project, symbolizing a lesson learned for the main character.
“Given that this song will be part of my EP, which comes out later this year, I knew I needed a song that felt like the climax, and this song felt like the perfect climax to build up to,” Yavin explains.
Adding: “We took inspiration from a real-life experience of mine where I had spent months seeing someone and although he had told me at the beginning that I shouldn’t fall for him, I couldn’t help but hold out hope and chase after him, and when we had finally gotten somewhere and it felt like we might actually fall in love, he suddenly switched”.
Produced by indie-pop darling Zach Benson and with vocals produced by Akira Oni, “Switch” was also co-written with JJ Alan – the track, along with the whole EP, is queer-led, an aspect that’s essential to Yavin. On the visuals, the artist is working with his husband, Brazilian photographer Kaio Cesar (known for working with Doechii, MUNA, Kehlani and more), and Tyler Frost.
“The visuals in both of the first two singles feature two consistent themes, which are the trophy and the clones. The trophy does represent winning somebody over, but even more than that, it represents the validation that you feel from it, which is the greater theme of this single and the EP,” Yavin says about the video and photo visuals.
