The head of brand at ARCHER explores the evolution of dating for queer men as the app surpasses 1 million downloads within 1 year of its national launch

Dating for gay and queer men has undergone a profound transformation over the past two decades. Just 10 or 20 years ago, many were still navigating the challenges of secrecy and anonymity, often forced to hide their identities in fear of rejection or harm. Today, however, the narrative has shifted dramatically. More men are coming out earlier, embracing their authentic selves with pride, and seeking spaces that celebrate their identities. Dating apps and social platforms have evolved alongside this shift, offering environments where self-expression is not only welcomed but encouraged. What was once a journey through hidden corners of the internet is now a public celebration of love, connection, and belonging.

I was closeted for over 20 years, so when I graduated college, dating apps became my only way to connect with other gay men. However, the dating options available to me at the time reinforced the damaging idea that queer love and connection should be secretive and hidden. My first experiences with dating apps were disheartening—profiles full of blank faces or people hiding behind torso shots, masking their identities. It was traumatizing because, after two decades of concealing who I truly was, I longed for authentic connections with other queer men. Yet, even in what should have been a safe space, I found more secrecy. Frustrated, I eventually turned to mainstream dating apps like Tinder, where I actually found love. But that experience left a lasting impression, reminding me of how important it is to have spaces where we can truly be ourselves—open, vulnerable, and proud.

ARCHER is a social-first dating app that has quickly become a favorite for queer men looking to connect in meaningful ways, without anonymity or secrecy. With over 1 million downloads in the past year [according to Sensor Tower], ARCHER is redefining the digital dating experience by focusing on face-first profiles, ensuring a more authentic and engaging way to meet people. A large majority of its users are single (91%), and while many are looking for various types of connections—whether it’s friendship (72%), dates (74%), relationships (69%), or even casual encounters (66%)—there’s a strong emphasis on communication, with 6 in 10 users simply looking for someone to chat with. ARCHER’s unique approach combines social interaction with dating, offering something for everyone seeking genuine connections.

Queer men today are increasingly embracing the freedom to show their true selves online, allowing openness and vulnerability to guide their connections and relationships. No longer bound by the need to fit into outdated boxes, they are expressing who they really are—quirks, values, and all. ARCHER’s data highlights this shift, with the most popular Tags used on the app including “goofy,” “honest,” “long-term relationship,” and “meditation,” reflecting a growing desire for genuine connections that go beyond surface-level attraction. These choices signal a move toward deeper, more meaningful relationships, where being open and vulnerable is not just accepted, but celebrated.

Queer men increasingly turn to dating apps not just for romantic connections but to build genuine friendships and find a sense of community. These platforms offer a space to connect with others who share similar experiences, providing opportunities for emotional support, camaraderie, and the creation of chosen families. For many, these apps become a vital tool in navigating both social and personal growth, offering a chance to foster meaningful relationships beyond just dating. All of this can only happen on a platform where [men/users/people] are proud to join and show up authentically.

On ARCHER, queer men are actively seeking connection, with over 70% of users on the platform looking for friendship and a sense of belonging. Many are drawn to the app’s vibrant, community-driven spaces, where conversations and connections thrive—especially within the curated Communities, which focus on everything from local events to general discussions. With over 15 million messages exchanged and tens of thousands of interactions taking place within these groups, it’s clear that users are eager to build meaningful relationships. More than 64% of ARCHER users have taken the initiative to start a conversation, highlighting a genuine desire for engagement. This dynamic environment fosters not just casual chats, but the cultivation of chosen families, as users connect, follow, and support each other—surpassing 1 million follows—reinforcing the sense of solidarity and community that many are searching for.

Looking ahead to 2025, dating and social media apps are poised to remain essential tools for building connections and relationships within the LGBTQIA+ community. As digital spaces continue to evolve, these platforms will not only facilitate romantic connections but also serve as hubs for friendship, support, and community-building. With more inclusive features, specialized communities, and user-driven spaces, apps will provide safe, affirming environments where individuals can explore their identities and connect with others who share similar experiences. As society becomes increasingly virtual and interconnected, these apps will play a crucial role in fostering deeper connections, helping LGBTQIA+ individuals navigate both their personal lives and broader social networks.

ARCHER stands as a testament to the progress of the gay and queer community, embracing a “face forward” approach that highlights the importance of authenticity and visibility. By ensuring that every profile showcases a face, ARCHER not only fosters genuine connections but also reflects the remarkable journey toward pride and acceptance that we see amongst the community. Today, gay and queer men can confidently celebrate their identities and forge meaningful relationships in an environment that values openness and self-expression.
